Italians Are Packing Away Summer. One Shelf Stays Out.

Every August the whole country empties its closets. One shelf is exempt, and nobody explains why.

1 · The ritual

Il cambio di stagione

Summer goes into a box under the bed, cooler clothes come down from the top of the wardrobe. It runs on the calendar, not the thermometer.

2 · The exception

One shelf stays out

Hip height, never full. Four or five things, chosen in August before the swap, not left over after it.

3 · The rule

How a piece earns its place

It has to change meaning depending on what is underneath it. A knit over a slip dress in August, over a shirt in October.

4 · The tell

Nothing heavy, nothing sheer

Weight is what dates a garment to one season. Linen knits, cotton knits, mid-weight wool. Take the weight out and it stops belonging to a month.

Five pieces, chosen on purpose

The shelf is a portrait of what you actually wear. Ours starts with the open-front knits.
